Where to Shop and What to Buy in Hsinchu
At the heart of Hsinchu is its many charming night markets. These market stalls sell almost anything you can possibly want, be it a steaming bowl of meatball soup and noodles, sticks of Taiwanese sausages or barbecued squids, silver bracelets and plants as well as flowers. In fact, there are plenty of stalls selling adorable pets so you may just be tempted to bring home a furry hamster, a playful kitten and even a cockerel! Vendors readily engage tourists in loud banter in their bid to attract more customers, and most are friendly enough to offer discounts without being too pushy.
Although they can’t be compared to Taipei’s sprawling megaplexes, shopping malls in Hsinchu can hold their own very well. Brand name items are sold here, and are as authentic as they come.
There are also many homegrown supermarkets in the city. Sometimes it pays to visit them and shop there because prices are lower compared to the bigger malls. Tip: it’s good to bring your own shopping bag or recyclable sack when you shop there - some stores charge a small fee for plastic bags in their bid to protect the environment.
Asian Handicrafts
Jade and Buddhist artifacts are the most popular items sold here. The store is small but packed with souvenirs; most of them are handmade and specially crafted in Hsinchu by skillful artisans. The prices are pretty affordable and the staff polite yet helpful.

Eslite Bookstore
Eslite Bookstore is just about the best place for bookworms to gather and browse the latest English language books. Some Chinese books are available as well but the shelves are dominated mainly by English tomes, magazines as well as stationery. You can also order books not found in the store but of course, they will take quite a bit of time to arrive.

One of the biggest department stores in Hsinchu is the Far East Department Store. There is nothing tacky about this place - all sorts of brand name fashion goods are available here, so you’ll see familiar names like Nike and Coach. Foodies will also love trawling the food court for a cornucopia of delicious Taiwanese and Western fare, while kids will love the indoor playground as well as the toy store.

Garden Street Night market
The Garden Street night market is one of Hsinchu’s most loved landmarks. Once you set foot inside the area, you will notice how neatly arranged the vendors’ stores are. There are plenty of stalls selling Taiwanese snacks, handicrafts, trinkets and local delicacies so you can browse all night to your heart’s content. Game stalls provide hours of fun and entertainment, so travelers with kids will definitely want to visit this place.

Holiday Market
The Holiday Market near the Hsinchu Municipal Stadium was first considered an expansive flower market but has since expanded to house dozens of market stalls selling herbs, fresh produce, organic food, handicraft and local delicacies. The usual Taiwanese fare such as sausages, noodles and sesame oil fried chicken cutlets can also be found here and is a delight for shoppers. There are also game booths as well as stalls selling pets and related paraphernalia - fancy bringing a baby chick, puppy or hamster home?

The Hsinchu flower market is a vibrant place, full of colours and buzzing activity with loud vendors, all eager to peddle their wares. They are known to gamely engage tourists in price negotiations but are not too forceful as to scare them away. Fruits, flowers, snacks and even pet kittens are some of the things you will find here. Tip: It’s best to come earlier in the morning.

The RT Mart is a nice little supermarket chain. All your daily necessities can be found here, and because the staff is friendly in a boisterous way, you will love visiting the supermarket for snacks, groceries and other fresh produce.
Location: Zhong Xiao RoadShin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store
The Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store is simply massive! Originally a chain store from Japan, the Mitsukoshi mall is a sprawling complex situated near the Ambassador Hotel. Tourists and foreigners are a common sight in the area. You can expect nothing but the best here - from dainty French cafés to a plethora of restaurants and eateries, travelers will definitely want to explore this department store for an afternoon of leisurely shopping.

SOGO Department Store
The SOGO Department Store chain is from Japan, but is thriving in Hsinchu. Besides the brand name stores here, visitors flock to the mall for their large cineplexes where their movie-going experience is further enhanced with plush seats and all-encompassing snack stands.

Windance Shopping Mall
Hardcore shoppers will be very pleased when they set eyes upon the gargantuan Windance Shopping Mall. The shopping centre covers more than 360,000sqm and is 17 floors high, chock full of specialty stores. As many as 150 brand name stores can be found here, pleasing even the fussiest shoppers. Kids will also be delighted at the large Toys ‘R’ Us store while foodies will drool at the sight of 15 restaurants as well as a sprawling food court just waiting to be discovered.
