Brown Sugar Live & Restaurant

Sophisticated Nightlife in Taipei

Brown Sugar Live & Restaurant is permanently closed.

Brown Sugar Live & Restaurant is a hugely popular live music club and fine dining eatery in Xinyi District. It has an elegant New Orleans jazz club style with a hip house band, an impressive wine list and such popularity that seating is by reservation only, all of which make it one of the most refined nights out in Taipei.

There is a large and well-stocked bar right in the middle of Brown Sugar, which is surrounded by moodily-lit comfortable couches – good for small groups and dates. At one end is the big stage, which is the main feature of the venue. There isn’t a dancefloor in front of it, partially because jazz isn’t really the kind of music you dance to, but mostly because the space is filled with tables for dining or just relaxing and enjoying the music with a drink.

The bar will serve up a good range of cocktails and fine whiskeys, but the real attraction of Brown Sugar Live & Restaurant is the wine list, which includes old and new world labels. The food to accompany this is a European and American fusion style, with heavy influences from New Orleans. The set menus are quite enticing, with the Chicken Resotto set (priced at NT$700), including the chef’s salad, clam chowder, the signature risotto and Blueberry crème cake. A table is by reservation only and is often fully-booked, though snacks and finger food are also available, such as the mini Wagyu hamburger for NT$100.

The place gets very busy after 21:00, with the live band really swinging. While the band itself rarely changes, the lead singer is regularly rotated to keep the sound fresh and there are many special events and guest appearances. Considered to be on the pricey side, Brown Sugar Live & Restaurant is one of the most cultured and sophisticated nights out in Taipei.
