L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon Taipei is a top French restaurant by the most decorated chef in the world. Chef Joël Robuchon has a galaxy of Michelin stars to his name, along with plenty of other accolades, and his creations are presented in this chic and popular fine dining eatery near the top of the luxurious Bellavita Shopping Mall in Xinyi District.
The restaurant opened in 2009, becoming the first and finest of a flood of establishments to be brought to Taipei by award-winning chefs. It has a dramatic red and black décor with a contemporary style and Asian touches. The centrally-located open kitchen is lined with 32 seats for those who want a close-up view of the talented executive Chef Oliver Jean and his team hard at work creating contemporary French haute cuisine for them and the 36 tables. A large glass wine cellar takes up a considerable portion of one wall, displaying an exceptional array of labels which, with the help of the sommelier, can be perfectly paired with your food.

The food menu at L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon Taipei comes in two forms: the “Decouverte” set menu of highly-recommended dishes, costing NT$6,800, or the “Composez” menu, which allows you to build your own set menu from the choices available, costing NT$1,380, NT$2,080 or NT$2,880, depending on the number of dishes you select. Each dish also has its own individual price, so you can make additions to your self-composed menu.
Dishes are elegantly presented and promptly delivered by excellent service staff. They include such unique concoctions as octopus carpaccio topped with salmon eggs, pan-seared foie gras with parmesan risotto, shallow-fried Amadai fish with artichoke and black olive, pan-seared duck filet with apricot chutney, free-range quail stuffed with foie gras. The desserts are particularly innovative, including the signature pear mousse in a spherical sugar ball with maple syrup ice cream, which looks like a giant golden pearl on your plate.
The hefty price tag makes L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon Taipei something of a luxury, but one which justifies the cost thanks to its first-rate food in elegant yet approachable surroundings. Although the Michelin guide has yet to visit Taiwan, this place is likely to be awarded a star or two when it does.
